Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

We think Mia talks to herself when she sleeps. Before she gets up in the morning, she's making unintelligible noises, that sound like groggy conversations with herself. We like it.

Jenn reported that Mia ate very well today. Mostly this entails finishing her small serving of cereal and baby food. In fact, Mia ate so well, that Jenn gave her an extra serving (I think it was peas).

I just checked on Mia: she's sleeping on her back. It takes a while before I can see and hear her breathing (I am usually at the door, so I don't wake her up). The room monitor is picking up the sounds of crickets. Mia has started getting into rattles. We have two: one for upstairs and one for downstairs. She'll shake it in that awkward manner of hers, occasionally hitting herself on the head or leg. She makes noise though: she likes that.

Mia is starting to lean forward on her own. In her high chair, she'll lean forward and stay that way for a minute or two. When I take her to the floor, however, she can't repeat this trick, although she can flop forward bent from the waist without complaining too much.

As I carried her around after work, I found myself noticing how much Mia is really looking at things now. The pictures and knick knacks on our refrigerator held her interest quite noticeably. She stared at Jenn and I so intently that I was getting spooked: she recognizes us!

When I read to her from the newspaper or some magazine (I only read a few paragraphs at a time to her), her hands reach up for the pages, and if she can grab them, she'll try to stuff them into her mouth.

Her drooling is more prodigious now. We changed her three times on Sunday. Her outfit is quite wet at the end of her day (which was around 7:45PM tonight).

Jenn's mom and step-father came to visit Mia and us today. It was a fun visit. Grandma and Larry marvelled at how much she's grown since the last time they saw them. It's always a visit like this that make me realize how much Mia has grown.

I also posted more pictures on the Pictures of Mia site (46-52).
