Mia's First Year

Jenn and I have a baby girl! Her name is Mia Magdalena Umali, and she was born Wednesday, March 28, 2001. This is our first baby. And this blog will be a daily record of my thoughts during her first year growing up with us.

This page only shows one week's entries. To see older entries, access the archives.

I also have plenty of pictures of Mia.

Rick's Ramblings BLOG is still being updated.

Tonight, underneath the dining room table, Mia let go her grip from one chair, balanced herself on both feet, and then grabbed another chair. When I see her try to crawl, she spends some time on her feet, her knees off the ground, crawling in quite awkward looking motion, but nevertheless inching closer and closer to real standing and real walking.

Mia did more "gentle" with me and Jenn tonight. I like how her small tiny hand gently touches our faces.

Jenn bought a little toothbrush for Mia. It isn't like an adult tooth brush. Instead, it's shaped like the silhouette of a lightbulb, with the brush end on the top of the bulb. It's meant to get at the front of Mia's mouth, where all her teeth are. Mia seemed to gnaw on it initially. Jenn had to sweep it across Mia's teeth.

Jenn cut some of Mia's hair; just the front hairs, so they wouldn't get into her eyes.

Jenn taught Mia "gentle" today.

Whenever we play with Mia up close, one of things she'll do is slap our faces. Not on purpose (of course). It's just something she does because she doesn't know differently. Today, Jenn rubbed Mia's hands across Jenn's face, gently and slowly, repeating the words "gentle". When I got home, Jenn was able to show how Mia can rub her face "gently". It was nice! And Mia put her hands on my face gently.

She still likes to put her finger in our mouths, however.

Mia woke up about twenty minutes ago with a flustered, angry cry, and I raced up the steps and calmed her down. Bad dream? Was she in a bad position? Earlier, Jenn went in and tried to move Mia's arm from between the bars of the crib. Mia woke up, and Jenn had to rock her back down. I think Mia had a bad dream.
